FAQ
Although not a "tournament" school, we have both held and attended numerous tournaments throughout the northeast United States over the years with great success. We are familiar with Olympic-style taekwondo tournament sparring and scoring, and have been judges in tournaments. However, our curriculum is based more on self-defense, and so some of the self-defense techniques we teach are not legal in tournaments. Most of our students are more interested in the self-defense aspect of martial arts, not the tournament aspect. We do support our students attending tournaments and are able to train them accordingly based on their interest in competition categories such as forms, weapons or sparring.
Yes! We have the most extensive traditional martial arts weapons curriculum of any school we know of. It is made up of approximately a dozen traditional weapons including nunchaku, bo staff, sword, three-section staff, tonfa, kama, short stick, cane, steel fan, butterfly swords and more. Each weapon has a specific curriculum and they are incorporated into training at higher belt levels. We do introduce nunchaku and kumdo (traditional bamboo sword) at earlier levels.
Our school was started in 1983 by a Korean Grandmaster, then passed to two other Korean Grandmasters before being taken over by the school's senior student who is now a Grandmaster himself! The school's newest owner, Master Pete Canavan has been training at the school since 1997 and is a 6th Dan (6th Degree) Black Best Master Instructor in both Hapkido and TaeKwonDo. Other forms of modern self-defense are also taught to higher belts and private clients based on Special Forces self-defense programs.
We say "from 5 to 95" is our age range. That being said, our oldest student is currently 70 years of age, and quite good!
Typically we start at 5 years of age when the child is starting Kindergarten and getting used to sitting still and following instructions. In our experience, any younger and it is typically more babysitting than learning. That said, we HAVE had 4 year olds that are able to participate, typically when they have older siblings. We will not take 3 year olds or younger. Reach out to schedule an intro so we can evaluate your child if you are interested and they are 4-5 years of age.
